Why Champai Soren new CM of Jharkhand instead of Kalpana Soren?

Hemant Soren who was the Chief Minister of Jharkhand resigned on Wednesday 31st January. After his arrest by the enforcement directorate, his party Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chose Champai Soren to replace him as the chief minister but there was media speculation that after Hemant Soren’s arrest, his wife Kalpana Soren would assume the chief minister post instead Champai Soren has been chosen as the leader for the CM’s post.

There was a claim made by a member of the BJP that a rebellion broke out due to the selection of the new CM among the JMM party. It was claimed that 18 out of 29 MLAs did not favor Kalpana Soren as the new CM, also it was claimed that these MLAs wanted Basant Soren to be the chief minister, who is the brother of Hemant Soren and the sitting MLA from Dumka.

Did Kalpana Soren not become the CM due to party rebellion or family rebellion?

As said above 18 out of 29 MLAs were not in support of Kalpana Soren to be the next CM of Jharkhand. It was also reported that Sita Soren, wife of Hemant Soren’s elder brother Durga Soren, was also keen to assume the chief minister post. As Durga Soren passed away in 2009, Sita Soren is currently the sitting MLA. She was also critical of Hemant Soren in the past and considers herself as the inheritor of JMM’s inheritance of Shibu Soren’s legacy as the wife of his oldest son Durga Soren.

It was also reported that Sita reacted negatively towards Kalpana being elected as the new Chief minister of Jharkhand. It was also quoted as ‘Mrs. Soren v/s Mrs. Soren’ .
